Shopping and Supermarkets in Javea

Shops in Javea

Opening times of shops tend to follow the traditional times based around the siesta, with many closing around 13.30 to 14.00, and opening up again between 16.00 and 17.00. The main reason behind this is to avoid working in the hottest part of the day in the summer months.

Many non-food shops do not open until 9.30 or 10 a.m. and some shops do not open on a Saturday afternoon, or if they are open on Saturdays, like a Hairdressers for example, they usually do not open on a Monday. Nearly all shops and local smaller supermarkets are closed on a Sunday. On national and local bank holidays, it is best to check beforehand, some supermarkets open during the morning, especially if the bank holiday falls on a Saturday or Monday.

Javea / Xabia

Javea Tourist Information. Xabia Tourist Information

Xàbia, also known as Jávea, is a coastal town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Marina Alta, a comarca in Alicante, Spain. The town itself is divided into three parts; the Old Quarter, the port and the village that is almost 3 km inland.

The northern Costa Blanca town of Javea (Xabia) lies about 80 km north of Alicante between Denia and Altea. Javea is located on the Costa Blanca, in the Valencian Community, just about equidistance between Valencia and Alicante, something like 100 kilometres either way. Located in the Marina Alta district, Javea is situated behind a wide bay and is sheltered by two rocky headlands. A very popular seaside town, the population of Javea swells from its usual 29,000 to over 100,000 during the busy summer months.

The Javea Xàbia district is located in the in the North East section of the Marina Alta area of Spain. It is in the Valley of the river Gorgos starting just east of the town, Gata de Gorgos.

The district includes the hilltops that range north and south of the valley that lead to the rocky headlands (capes) of Cap de Antonio in the north and Cap Prim, Cap Negre and Cap de la Nau.

It is mainland Spains most easterly point and for this reason is often referred to as “amanecer de españa” or “the dawn of Spain”, being where the sun first rises.

On a clear day, the Balearic island of Ibiza can be seen quite clearly.

Dominating the skyline and standing guard over Jávea is Montgó, affectionately known locally as “Elephant Mountain” and which is now a protected area. There are several routes to the top of the mountain and at certain times there are organised walking excursions. The more adventurous can explore the cave, which forms the eye of the “elephant”.

Enjoying a temperate Mediterranean climate, Javea is sheltered from cold northerly winds during the winter time by the huge Mount Montgó, keeping temperatures mild throughout colder months. Apart from the shelter it gives, Mount Montgó also provides a dramatic backdrop for the town and these days forms part of the Mount Montgó Natural Park (declared as such in 1987), covering some 21 km2 and containing some interesting archaeological remains.

Javea old town is steeped in history and it’s evident in the architecture, with its Tosca stone porticoes, gothic bay windows, wrought iron window bars and balcony railings. The church of San Bartolemé in the town centre is an example of late gothic architecture with a defensive character. ?The “Soler Blasco” Archaeological Museum is close by in the narrow streets and offers a wealth of information about Iberian history.

Dominating the fishing port is the modern silhouette of the church of Nuestra Señora de Loreto, with its roof depicting a ships hull. Outside the town, following the road to the San Antonio cape, the architectural sites include the monastery of Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, a series of small hermitages clutch the slopes of the mountain and ancient windmills dominate the landscape.

In the centre of town the covered indoor market sells all sorts of fabulous fresh local produce: fruit, vegetables, meat and fresh fish are brought up from the port daily.

The importance of the town’s maritime activities is apparent in the port area; known as Aduanas de Mar, it boasts a lovely promenade and some excellent fish restaurants where you can enjoy the ‘catch of the day’.

The fishing harbour is situated next to a attractive marina full of interesting yachts, a lovely area for a morning or evening stroll.

Pavement cafés and bars overlooking the Mediterranean invite you to sit and have a drink and just enjoy the ambience of the port. ?

The Arenal area offers a beautiful sandy bay with palm trees and play areas for children. The bay is framed by the promenade with its wonderful choice of bars and restaurants offering national and international specialities.

Javea is a great place to shop with an excellent choice of shops and boutiques.

Javea has an excellent choice of sea sport and fishing facilities. The modern yacht club at the sports marina has nearly 300 berths and offers all types of water sports: sailing, fishing, scuba diving, water skiing, and windsurfing.

There are a number of sports clubs and associations in the area where you can enjoy a game of tennis, horse-riding ?and even shooting.

Just outside the town, surrounded by pines and orange groves, the Javea Golf Club offers a pleasant setting for golfers. There are several other golf courses within easy access of Javea.

The Javea town fiesta is held during the second fortnight of July and is an occasion for feasting, dancing, parades, music and fireworks, as are the Moors & Christians parades at the end of August.

From 28 April – 3 May Javea pays homage to Jesus the Nazarene and from 1 –8 September, the town celebrates their patroness Our Lady of Loreto.
