The Meeting of Muixerangues in Gandia was one of the most dramatic and emotional cultural events in the Valencian Community this year. Four legendary muixeranga groups — Algemesí, Marina Alta, Safor and Xàtiva — gathered in Gandia’s Plaza Major to perform their iconic human towers, a tradition deeply rooted in Valencian identity and Mediterranean heritage.

The rhythmic sound of dolçaina and tabalet filled the square as each colla formed the strong base needed for these impressive human constructions. Crowds watched in silence as children — the traditional xiquets and xiquetes — climbed carefully to the top, creating perfectly balanced towers that rose high above Gandia’s historic centre.

These muixeranga performances showcased not only skill and balance, but also unity, discipline and cultural pride. However, the event also demonstrated the real risks involved in these challenging towers.

One of the tallest towers suddenly collapsed during the descent. A small wobble turned into a rapid structural failure, sending several members crashing to the ground. The audience gasped, emergency services rushed in, and one participant was taken to hospital with injuries. The shocking fall was a powerful reminder of the danger behind every muixeranga figure.

Another tower produced the most inspiring moment of the entire event. As the structure began to shake, a woman in the centre formation showed extraordinary strength, stabilising the tower while two young children stood on her shoulders. Her determination prevented what could have been another serious fall. The relief on everyone’s faces when they reached the ground safely captured the true spirit of the muixeranga: trust, courage and teamwork.

Una de las torres más altas se derrumbó repentinamente durante el descenso. Un pequeño tambaleo se convirtió en un rápido fallo estructural, que hizo que varios miembros cayeran al suelo. El público se quedó sin aliento, los servicios de emergencia acudieron de inmediato y un participante fue trasladado al hospital con heridas. La impactante caída fue un poderoso recordatorio del peligro que acecha a cada figura de muixeranga.

Otra torre protagonizó el momento más inspirador de todo el evento. Cuando la estructura empezó a temblar, una mujer en la formación central demostró una fuerza extraordinaria, estabilizando la torre mientras dos niños pequeños se subían a sus hombros. Su determinación evitó lo que podría haber sido otra caída grave. El alivio en los rostros de todos al llegar sanos y salvos al suelo capturó el verdadero espíritu de la muixeranga: confianza, valentía y trabajo en equipo.
