Muro del Alcoy or Muro de l’Alcoi (in Catalan), or simply Muro, is a town located in the comarca of Comtat, in the province of Alicante, Spain, lying at the foot of the Sierra de Mariola. Muro del Alcoy has an area of 30.5 km² and, according to the 2002 census, a total population of 7,532 inhabitants.
The main festival in Muro is the colorful and popular Moros i Cristians, celebrated during the second weekend of May. According to popular tradition the festival commemorate the battles, combats and fights
between Moors (or Muslims) and Christians during the period known as Reconquista (from the 8th century through the 15th century). The festivals represent the capture of the city by the Moors and the subsequent Christian reconquest.
How to get to Muro d Alcoy
Alcoy is a short drive away on the N340 and there is the Alcoy-Gandia railway line. From here you can also travel by train to Valencia calling at Ontinyent,Albaida and Xativa.
