Moros y Cristianos 2026 in Piles, Valencia
Every May, the small coastal town of Piles comes alive with music, colour, fireworks, and tradition during its annual Moros y Cristianos celebrations. Held as part of the local fiestas in honour of Saint Philip Neri (Sant Felip Neri), the event is one of the most visually spectacular celebrations in the Safor region of Valencia, Spain.
Although many visitors associate Moros y Cristianos with larger towns in Alicante or the famous celebrations in Alcoy, the version celebrated in Piles offers a more intimate and authentic atmosphere. Narrow streets fill with spectators while marching bands echo through the town late into the evening as the filaes and comparsas make their dramatic entrances.
The festival recreates the historic battles between the Moors and Christians during Spain’s Reconquista period. Over time, these historical reenactments evolved into the colourful fiestas celebrated throughout the Valencian Community today. In Piles, tradition mixes with community spirit, giving the event a warm local atmosphere that feels very different from larger tourist-focused celebrations.

One of the highlights of the 2026 celebrations was the spectacular night parade featuring elaborate costumes, live music, and impressive choreography from the participating filaes. The detailed outfits ranged from heavily armoured Christian-inspired warriors to richly decorated Moorish costumes with feathers, masks, gold detailing, and dramatic face paint.
Featured filaes and comparsas included:
- Filà Al-Lio (Moro)
- Filà Al-Almasac (Moro)
- Alzahara
- Contrabandistes
- Pirates
- Arquers
The 2026 captaincy was led by Pilar Climent, representing the Pirates filà during this year’s celebrations. The captaincy plays an important role in Moros y Cristianos fiestas, often leading some of the most elaborate sections of the parade with specially designed costumes and themed performances.
Music is also central to the celebrations. Powerful brass bands accompany the procession throughout the evening, performing traditional marcha mora and marcha cristiana compositions that have become closely associated with these festivals across Valencia and Alicante.
Located near Gandía / Gandia on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, Piles is normally a quiet seaside town known for its beaches and relaxed atmosphere. During fiesta week, however, the town transforms into a celebration of Valencian identity, history, and culture.
For visitors to Spain looking to experience an authentic local fiesta away from the larger tourist crowds, Moros y Cristianos in Piles is a fantastic example of the traditions that continue to define many towns across the Valencian Community.
