Iberia Launches Free Starlink WiFi Across Its Fleet
For years, airline passengers have accepted that using the internet in the air usually meant paying high prices for a slow connection that struggled to do much more than send emails or browse a few web pages. Streaming video, making video calls or uploading photos was often out of the question.
That is beginning to change, and Spain’s national airline, Iberia, is leading the way.
The airline has become the first Spanish carrier to introduce Starlink-powered onboard internet, giving passengers access to fast, reliable WiFi that is free to use throughout their journey. It is a major upgrade that promises to transform the onboard experience for both holidaymakers and business travellers.
What is Starlink?
Starlink is the satellite internet network developed by SpaceX. Unlike traditional aircraft internet services, which rely on satellites positioned around 36,000 kilometres above the Earth, Starlink uses thousands of satellites orbiting much closer to the planet.
This low-Earth orbit network dramatically reduces the delay, or latency, that passengers experience when using the internet. The result is a connection that feels much more like using broadband at home rather than a typical in-flight WiFi service.
Passengers can browse the web, check social media, stream music and video, upload photos, join video meetings and message friends and family with far fewer interruptions than older systems.
First aircraft already in service
Iberia’s first Starlink-equipped aircraft entered commercial service on 24 June 2026, operating between Madrid and São Paulo. It marks the beginning of a fleet-wide rollout that will continue over the next two years.
As more aircraft receive the technology, passengers travelling on both short-haul European routes and long-haul international services will gradually gain access to the improved internet service.
During the transition, some aircraft will still use Iberia’s previous onboard WiFi system, so availability will depend on which aircraft operates your flight.
Free WiFi for passengers
One of the biggest attractions is that the service is being offered free of charge for members of Iberia’s loyalty programme.
Passengers who are not already members can simply register before or during their flight to access the service, making it easy for almost everyone onboard to benefit.
The airline says passengers will enjoy internet access from shortly after boarding until arrival at the gate, removing many of the restrictions that travellers have become used to with older systems.
Depending on demand from other passengers, users should be able to browse websites, stream entertainment, catch up on work emails and stay connected with friends and family throughout their journey.
Part of Iberia’s long-term investment
The introduction of Starlink is part of Iberia’s wider Flight Plan 2030 strategy, which focuses on improving the customer experience through investment in new aircraft, digital technology and more sustainable operations.
For travellers, onboard connectivity has become increasingly important. Many passengers now expect to stay connected wherever they are, whether they are travelling for business or enjoying a family holiday.
Fast, reliable internet has become almost as important as comfortable seats and good in-flight entertainment, especially on long-haul flights lasting eight hours or more.
A wider rollout across IAG
Iberia is not the only airline set to benefit.
Its parent company, International Airlines Group (IAG), has signed an agreement to introduce Starlink across more than 500 aircraft operated by its airlines. That means passengers flying with British Airways, Aer Lingus, Vueling and LEVEL are also expected to benefit as installations continue across their fleets.
This group-wide investment reflects a growing trend within the aviation industry as airlines compete to offer a better onboard experience.
Several carriers around the world have already introduced Starlink, with many reporting significantly higher customer satisfaction thanks to faster internet speeds and more reliable connections.
The future of flying
For many travellers, free high-speed internet could become one of the biggest improvements to air travel in recent years.
Whether you want to stream your favourite TV programme, reply to work emails, keep children entertained with online content or simply stay in touch with family while crossing the Atlantic, Starlink promises a much smoother experience than previous generations of aircraft WiFi.
As Iberia continues installing the technology across its fleet over the coming months, passengers flying from Spain can look forward to an onboard internet service that finally delivers the speed and reliability modern travellers have come to expect.
For anyone planning their next trip, the days of painfully slow and expensive in-flight internet may finally be coming to an end.
