The Holy Burial Solemn Procession of the Solemn Burial (La Procesión del Santo Entierro) is perhaps the most moving and important highlight of Gandia‘s Holy Week in Spain. It happens every Good Friday evening, and it’s really about the celebration of a solid tradition passed on from one generation to another.

In the center of the festivities are the brotherhoods of the city, who organize the whole event. They precede these huge, elaborately adorned floats called pasos, representing scenes of Christ’s life at the rear. These floats are carried by costaleros (the men who carry them on their shoulders), then hooded individuals, slow drumming, and marching bands playing somber, passionate music. The whole atmosphere is hugely emotive.

The procession snakes through Gandia’s old quarter, and streets are lined with people—citizens and travelers—standing still, absorbing it all. It’s a definite feeling of stillness and respect. It’s a night to reflect, remember sacrifice and hope, and to feel connected—you don’t even have to be religious to enjoy the atmosphere.

This major Good Friday event is recognized as a Festival of National Tourist Interest since 2019, and included all the brotherhoods of Gandia, except for the Brotherhood of the Risen Christ.​​

La Procesión del Santo Entierro es quizás el momento más emotivo e importante de la Semana Santa de Gandía, España. Se celebra cada Viernes Santo por la noche y se trata de la celebración de una sólida tradición transmitida de generación en generación.

En el centro de las festividades se encuentran las cofradías de la ciudad, que organizan todo el evento. Preceden a estos enormes pasos, ricamente adornados, que representan escenas de la vida de Cristo en la parte trasera. Estos pasos son portados por costaleros (los hombres que los llevan a hombros), luego por individuos encapuchados, tambores lentos y bandas de música que interpretan música sombría y apasionada. El ambiente es profundamente emotivo.

La procesión serpentea por el casco antiguo de Gandía, y las calles se llenan de gente —ciudadanos y viajeros— que se detiene, absorbiéndolo todo. Se respira una profunda sensación de quietud y respeto. Es una noche para reflexionar, recordar el sacrificio y la esperanza, y para sentirse conectado; ni siquiera es necesario ser religioso para disfrutar de la atmósfera.
