Costa Blanca News – Final Edition of the popular Newspaper
The final edition of the Costa Blanca News has been published today.
For over 50 years, the Costa Blanca News has been a popular newspaper for British expats along the Costa Blanca.
In a message posted on social media,
It is with sadness and regret that the staff have to announce that this Friday’s paper will be the last edition of the Costa Blanca News.
After 53 years serving the local community, the paper is closing down
This means that current members of staff will be out of work, although the newspaper title has been put up for sale and offers are being considered by the owner.
We, the staff, would like to thank readers and contributors profusely for your support over the years and to apologise for not being able to carry on producing your weekly newspaper.
We left Calpe early in June 2024 & returned from Germany Dec 23rd. Yesterday, Friday, I went to our local Consum to pick up copies of the Costa Blanca News & Costa Blanca Nachrichten, as usual, but was surprised to find no “News” in the store. Later, last night, I checked in another store in case the “News” had been sold out in Consum, but again it was not avaiable in the local Mas i Mas either. That’s when my suspicions grew & early today I learned you had your last publication June 27th, so only 3 weeks after we had left last summer.
I’m sorry about this! I’ll be blunt … the “Nachrichten” was always a more professional paper, leaning a bit more toward intellectual subjects & style in comparison to the “News” since the “News” appeared to be more focused on gossip-style items and, in my American eyes, on learning toward duplicating the more trashy British newspapers’ favoring sensationalism-to-sell.
Whatever! The combination was always welcome on Fridays, me leafing through the “News” while my German wife enjoyed the “Nachricthen” and after, we would swap and catch up on the activities of our region.
Thank you for your publication & work over the years. I will miss your paper, regardless of what might seem like a negative “review” of it as I gave up above. It was what it was, for me, and nevertheless I enjoyed it.
Perhaps the paper will be sold well & revive? As a native English-(American) speaker, I would like that very much.
All best wishes your way and to all your journalists who worked with and for you. Good luck going forward!
