Spain Earthquake: M5 Tremor Hits Granada
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake has struck near Granada in southern Spain, causing strong shaking across the area and being felt across a wide part of Andalucía.
The earthquake occurred during the early hours of Saturday, August 15, when many people were asleep. The sudden shaking caused residents to leave their homes, while reports of cracked walls, fallen masonry and other minor damage began to emerge.
There have been no reports of widespread serious structural damage or fatalities, although authorities have been carrying out inspections of buildings in affected areas.
Where did the earthquake happen?
The epicentre was in the Granada metropolitan area, close to Alhendín, south-west of Granada city.
The Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN), which monitors seismic activity in Spain, initially recorded the earthquake at a slightly lower magnitude before revising it to approximately 5.0.
Its relatively shallow depth meant that the movement was strongly felt at the surface.
The earthquake was reported across a large area of southern Spain, including parts of Granada, Málaga, Córdoba, Jaén, Almería and Sevilla.
For residents close to the epicentre, the experience was considerably more dramatic than the magnitude figure alone might suggest.

Buildings shaken and minor damage reported
The earthquake caused noticeable movement in buildings throughout the Granada area.
Reports have included cracks in walls and façades, falling pieces of masonry and other minor damage. Some buildings have been inspected as a precaution, while residents in some locations temporarily went outside following the main tremor.
There have also been reports of people becoming trapped in lifts when services were disrupted.
However, it is important to distinguish between minor earthquake damage and major structural destruction.
At this stage, the available information does not indicate that Granada has suffered widespread catastrophic building damage.
A sequence of aftershocks
One of the reasons the earthquake has continued to concern residents is that the main tremor has been followed by a sequence of smaller earthquakes.
The Granada area had already experienced seismic activity before the main event, and further tremors have been recorded afterwards.
After a significant earthquake, smaller movements are common as the surrounding fault system adjusts. Most aftershocks are considerably weaker than the main earthquake, although occasionally another significant tremor can occur.
For people who have just experienced a strong earthquake, however, even a relatively small aftershock can be frightening.
Why does Granada get earthquakes?
Granada is one of the more seismically active areas of Spain.
Southern Spain is affected by the complex interaction between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. Unlike places such as California, Spain does not have one enormous, easily identifiable fault running through the country, but the stresses created by the movement of the plates are distributed across numerous faults.
The Granada region has experienced significant earthquakes and earthquake sequences in the past.
Consequently, an earthquake around magnitude 5 in the area is not completely unexpected, although the location and timing of each earthquake cannot be predicted.
Could an earthquake like this happen in Valencia or on the Costa Blanca?
The Granada earthquake is not an earthquake affecting Valencia or the Costa Blanca, and there is currently no reason to suggest that this particular event means an earthquake is heading towards eastern Spain.
However, earthquakes are not unknown in the wider Valencia and Alicante regions.
Eastern and southeastern Spain have their own seismic activity, and earthquakes are regularly detected by Spain’s monitoring network. Most are small and go unnoticed by the public.
The important point is that earthquakes cannot currently be predicted with sufficient accuracy to say when or where the next significant earthquake will occur.
Spain’s earthquake monitoring system
Earthquake information in Spain is monitored by the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), which records seismic events and publishes information about their magnitude, location and depth.
The IGN’s earthquake catalogue is particularly useful during an event such as this because initial earthquake measurements can be revised as more seismic data becomes available.
That is why different reports may initially give slightly different magnitudes for the same earthquake.
A reminder that Spain is not earthquake-free
For tourists and residents, the Granada earthquake is a useful reminder that Spain is not a completely earthquake-free country.
Most earthquakes are small, but parts of southern and southeastern Spain have experienced much stronger events throughout history.
For now, the Granada earthquake appears to have been a strong but relatively localised seismic event, with most of the reported consequences involving shaking, minor damage and understandably nervous residents rather than a major disaster.
Authorities will continue monitoring the area for further aftershocks.
