Gandia Spain – Chinese New Year Parade Year of the Horse
The Chinese New Year Parade 2026 in Gandia brought colour, rhythm and tradition to the heart of the city, celebrating the arrival of the Year of the Fire Horse in spectacular style. Over the past few years, this event has grown into one of Gandia’s most vibrant multicultural celebrations, attracting both local residents and visitors from across the Valencian Community.
Taking place in central Gandia, the festivities began in the afternoon with cultural workshops and activities designed to introduce visitors to traditional Chinese customs. Families gathered to explore calligraphy demonstrations, decorative arts, and elements of Chinese gastronomy before the main parade began. As the evening approached, the streets filled with anticipation along Paseo Germanías and the surrounding historic centre.
The parade itself, known locally as a cabalgata, delivered an energetic and visually stunning experience. One of the highlights was the traditional Lion Dance performance. Accompanied by powerful drumbeats and rhythmic percussion, the lion moved dynamically through the streets, symbolising strength, protection and good fortune for the year ahead. The performers’ skill and coordination brought the lion to life, drawing applause from the crowds lining the route.
A key ceremonial moment of the celebration was the symbolic “eye-dotting” ritual. This traditional act involves ceremonially painting the lion’s eyes to awaken its spirit and invite prosperity and positive energy. The ceremony, performed near Gandia City Hall at the end of the route, created a focal point for the evening’s celebrations and reinforced the cultural authenticity of the event.
Throughout the parade, vibrant red and gold costumes, flowing fabrics and decorative lanterns transformed central Gandia into a lively showcase of Chinese heritage. The contrast between the historic Valencian streets and the colourful Asian traditions created a unique atmosphere that reflected Gandia’s growing international community. The event successfully blended cultural exchange with festive entertainment, making it accessible and enjoyable for all ages.
The Year of the Fire Horse is associated with energy, movement and renewal, and the mood of the evening certainly reflected those qualities. Music echoed through the streets, children watched in fascination, and spectators captured the spectacle as the parade wound its way through the city centre.
The Chinese New Year celebrations in Gandia continue to strengthen cultural ties and highlight the diversity of the region. What began as a local initiative has become a much-anticipated annual event, adding another layer to the city’s rich calendar of fiestas and public celebrations.
For anyone visiting Gandia during this period, the Chinese New Year parade offers a memorable experience filled with tradition, symbolism and community spirit.
