Every August, the streets of Denia (Dénia) on Spain’s Costa Blanca are transformed for one of the town’s most spectacular traditional celebrations: Moros i Cristians, or Moors and Christians.

The festival combines history, music, elaborate costumes, huge parades and centuries of Christian and Moorish imagery, creating an event that is particularly impressive for visitors experiencing Dénia for the first time.

In 2026, the celebrations once again brought the streets around the town centre to life, culminating in the spectacular Desfile de Gala.

Moros i Cristians is a traditional festival celebrated in many parts of the Valencian Community and southeastern Spain. The festivities use the imagery of the medieval conflict between Moorish and Christian forces to create elaborate modern-day celebrations.

In Dénia, the festival is centred around Sant Roc and takes place during August. The programme includes a variety of events, but the Desfile de Gala is one of the major highlights, with the different filaes parading through the centre of the town.

For visitors, it is an opportunity to experience one of the region’s most colourful and spectacular fiestas rather than simply another summer event.

Dénia’s Moros i Cristians was officially recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Autonómico in 2022.

The Christian side of the 2026 Desfile de Gala featured nine filaes, each with its own identity, costumes and traditions.

The Christian groups bring together imagery associated with medieval knights, military orders, Christian forces and the maritime history of the region.

The Cavallers filà held the 2026 Christian Captaincy, providing a spectacular finale to the Christian section of the parade. The 2026 captaincies have particular historical significance because both the Christian and Moorish captaincies were held by filaes connected with the early history of Dénia’s festival.

A festival with roots in 1980

The modern Moros i Cristians celebrations in Dénia began in 1980.

A group of local festival enthusiasts approached the town’s authorities with the idea of introducing a Moros i Cristians celebration into the summer festivities held in honour of Sant Roc.

The first gala parade took place on 15 August 1980.

It looked very different from today’s spectacular event. There were no elaborate boatos, no captaincies and none of the huge costumes and productions now associated with the parade. Instead, the first event consisted mainly of festeros and musicians making their way along Carrer Marqués de Campo.

The festival grew rapidly after its successful first year. New filaes were formed, the programme expanded and the famous Moorish landing (Desembarc Moro) was introduced in 1981.

The figure of the captain was introduced in 1984, while the Templaris joined the Christian side several years later in 1988. Women’s participation was formally opened up through changes to the festival’s statutes in the 1990s, with women becoming involved from 1997.

Today, the festival has developed into a major annual celebration attracting both local residents and visitors.

More than just a parade

Although the Desfile de Gala is perhaps the easiest event for tourists to experience, the Dénia Moros i Cristians programme extends across much of the first half of August.

The celebrations include concerts, flag ceremonies, informal parades known as entraetes, the spectacular Desembarc Moro, children’s events and other traditional activities. The 2026 programme ran through the first half of August, with the main celebrations concentrated around 13–16 August.

The Moorish landing is particularly distinctive. Dénia introduced its first desembarc in 1981, only a year after the festival itself began.

For anyone visiting Dénia during the festival period, checking the official programme is worthwhile because there are opportunities to see the celebrations at different times of day and in different parts of the town.

Visiting Dénia for Moros i Cristians

If you’re staying on the Costa Blanca during August, Dénia is well worth considering for a day or evening visit when the Moros i Cristians celebrations are taking place.

The historic centre, Marqués de Campo, the port and the surrounding streets provide a very different atmosphere during the fiestas.

Dénia itself is also an excellent tourist destination, with its castle and historic centre, marina, beaches, restaurants and easy access to the Montgó Natural Park.

The Moros i Cristians celebrations add another dimension to a visit — particularly if you enjoy Spanish fiestas, traditional music, photography and local culture.
