Aircon Cool or Dry Mode: Which Is Best for Cooling?
If your home is hot and your air conditioner has both Cool and Dry modes, which one should you use?
It is a question that causes plenty of debate, particularly during hot and humid weather. Some people swear that Dry mode makes a room feel cooler and costs less to run, while others argue that Cool mode is the only proper way to reduce the temperature.
The simple answer is that Cool mode is normally best when you want to lower the temperature of a room, while Dry mode is designed primarily to remove excess humidity from the air.
However, there is a little more to it than that.
In some conditions, particularly in hot and humid areas such as Spain’s Mediterranean coastline, Dry mode can make a room feel much more comfortable even if the temperature does not fall very much.
The best setting depends on whether your biggest problem is heat, humidity or a combination of both.
What does Cool mode actually do?
Cool mode is exactly what most people think of when they switch on the air conditioning.
You select the temperature you want, such as 24°C, and the air conditioner works to bring the room down towards that temperature.
The indoor unit passes warm room air over a cold evaporator coil. Heat is removed from the air and transferred outside, while the cooled air is circulated back into the room.
As the air is cooled, the air conditioner will normally remove some moisture as well. This is because water vapour in the warm air can condense on the cold indoor coil and drain away.
This means that Cool mode performs two jobs at the same time. Its main purpose is to remove heat from the room, but it also provides some dehumidification.
If your room is 29°C and you want it to be 24°C, Cool mode is normally the correct setting.
What does Dry mode do?
Dry mode works differently.
Its main purpose is to reduce the amount of moisture in the air. Depending on the air conditioner, the compressor and fan may operate differently from normal Cool mode, often cycling to remove moisture without continuously trying to bring the room down to a specific temperature.
The exact behaviour varies between manufacturers and models. Some air conditioners cool the room quite noticeably while in Dry mode, while others focus much more heavily on dehumidification.
This is why two people can use Dry mode on different air conditioners and have very different experiences.
The important thing is that Dry mode is not normally intended as a replacement for Cool mode when the room is very hot.
If the room temperature is 30°C, switching to Dry may remove moisture and make the air feel less sticky, but it may not reduce the temperature as quickly or as effectively as Cool mode.
Why humidity makes such a big difference
This is where the debate becomes more interesting.
Air temperature is only part of the story when it comes to comfort.
The human body cools itself partly by sweating. As sweat evaporates from the skin, it removes heat from the body.
When the humidity is high, sweat evaporates less effectively.
That is why a humid 28°C day can feel far more uncomfortable than a dry 30°C day.
The same applies inside your home.
A room at 26°C with very high humidity can feel hot, sticky and uncomfortable. Reducing the humidity may make the room feel significantly more comfortable, even if the thermometer still reads 25°C or 26°C.
This is where Dry mode can be particularly useful.
Cool mode is best when the room is hot
If the main problem is temperature, use Cool mode.
Imagine coming home on a hot summer afternoon and finding the room at 29°C. The walls, furniture and air inside the room have all absorbed heat.
You could switch the air conditioner to Dry mode, but you would mainly be asking it to deal with moisture.
What you really need first is to remove heat.
Set the air conditioner to Cool mode at a sensible temperature, such as 24°C or 25°C, and allow it to bring the room temperature down.
Cool mode will normally remove some humidity during this process anyway.
For most situations where a room is simply too hot, Cool mode is the fastest and most effective choice.
Dry mode can be better when the room feels sticky
Now imagine a different situation.
The room is already 25°C or 26°C. That is not excessively hot, but the humidity is very high and the air feels sticky.
You may not need to lower the temperature much further.
In this situation, Dry mode can make sense.
By removing excess moisture, the air conditioner can make the room feel more comfortable without necessarily running in the same way as it would when trying to force the temperature down to 21°C or 22°C.
This can be particularly useful in coastal areas.
Anyone living near the Mediterranean will know that the temperature can sometimes be relatively moderate while the humidity makes the air feel uncomfortable. A warm and humid evening can feel far more unpleasant than the temperature alone suggests.
Dry mode is designed for exactly this type of situation.
Is Dry mode cheaper to run?
This is probably the biggest source of confusion.
The answer is sometimes, but not always.
Dry mode is often described as being cheaper because the air conditioner may not run the compressor continuously or may use different operating cycles.
However, electricity consumption depends on many factors, including the air conditioner itself, the room temperature, the outdoor temperature, the humidity level, the size of the room and how long the unit needs to operate.
A modern inverter air conditioner may already be very efficient in Cool mode once the room reaches the selected temperature.
On the other hand, Dry mode can become inefficient if you are trying to use it to cool a room that is simply too hot. The unit may run for a long time without reducing the temperature as effectively as Cool mode.
So it is wrong to say that Dry mode always saves electricity.
The more accurate answer is that using the right mode for the conditions is usually the most efficient approach.
If the problem is heat, use Cool mode. If the room is already reasonably cool but feels damp and sticky, Dry mode may be the better choice.
The best way to cool a hot and humid room
If your room is both hot and humid, there is no reason to treat Cool and Dry as competing modes.
They can be used at different stages.
Start with Cool mode to bring the temperature down. Once the room is comfortable, assess how it feels. If the temperature is fine but the air still feels humid or sticky, switching to Dry mode for a period may improve comfort.
For example, if your room is 29°C and humid, you could use Cool mode set to 24°C or 25°C. Once the room has cooled, you may find that the humidity has already fallen enough and there is no need to use Dry mode at all.
If the room still feels damp or uncomfortable, Dry mode can then be used to remove additional moisture.
This approach makes much more sense than expecting Dry mode to do all the cooling from the start.
What temperature should you set your air conditioner to?
There is no single perfect temperature.
A setting of around 24°C to 26°C is often a sensible compromise between comfort and electricity consumption during hot weather.
Setting the air conditioner extremely low does not normally cool the room faster. If the room is 30°C, setting the thermostat to 18°C instead of 24°C does not magically make the air conditioner more powerful.
It simply tells the unit to continue operating for longer before reaching the selected temperature.
A moderate setting can therefore be more comfortable and more economical, especially when there is a large difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures.
The aim should not necessarily be to make the room cold. It should be to make it comfortable.
Fan speed also matters
The fan setting can have a surprisingly large effect on comfort.
A higher fan speed circulates cooled air around the room more quickly, which can help bring down the temperature and prevent hot areas from developing.
Once the room has reached a comfortable temperature, you may prefer a lower fan speed for quieter operation.
Some people also find that a gentle air movement makes a room feel cooler even when the thermostat setting remains unchanged.
This is another reason why comfort is not determined by temperature alone.
A room at 25°C with lower humidity and gentle air movement can feel considerably more comfortable than a still, humid room at 23°C.
Why your air conditioner may behave differently
One reason for the Cool versus Dry debate is that not all air conditioners operate in exactly the same way.
The exact behaviour of Dry mode can vary between manufacturers and models.
Some units allow very little control over the temperature while in Dry mode. Others automatically adjust the fan speed or compressor operation. Some may cool the room quite significantly, while others concentrate more on removing moisture.
This means that the instruction manual for your particular air conditioner is worth checking.
If your unit has a humidity setting, an automatic mode or a dedicated dehumidification system, its behaviour may differ from a basic air conditioner with a simple Cool and Dry button.
There is therefore no universal rule saying that every air conditioner will use exactly the same amount of electricity in Dry mode.
Cool or Dry: which should you use?
For most situations, the decision is actually quite simple.
If the room is hot, use Cool mode.
If the room is already reasonably cool but feels humid, sticky or damp, use Dry mode.
If the room is both hot and humid, start with Cool mode and let the air conditioner reduce the temperature. You can then use Dry mode later if excess humidity remains a problem.
The mistake is assuming that Dry mode is simply a cheaper version of Cool mode.
It is not.
The two settings are designed for different primary jobs. Cool mode is mainly there to remove heat, while Dry mode is mainly there to remove moisture.
The best choice for hot and humid summers
In places with long, hot and humid summers, the best approach is often to use both modes intelligently.
During the hottest part of the day, Cool mode is normally the obvious choice. It can reduce the temperature and remove some humidity at the same time.
During a humid evening, however, you may not need aggressive cooling. If the temperature is already comfortable but the air feels sticky, Dry mode may provide exactly the improvement you need.
The key is to think about what is actually making you uncomfortable.
Is the room genuinely too hot?
Or is the temperature reasonable, but the humidity is making it feel unpleasant?
Once you know the answer, choosing between Cool and Dry becomes much easier.

The bottom line
Cool mode is best for cooling a hot room.
Dry mode is best for reducing excess humidity.
If your room is hot and humid, start by removing the heat with Cool mode. Once the temperature is comfortable, use Dry mode if humidity is still making the room feel sticky.
Rather than arguing over which mode is universally better, the real answer is to use the setting that matches the conditions.
And during a hot, humid summer, that may mean using Cool mode first and Dry mode later.
