Could Autumn 2026 Bring More DANA Storms to Valencia?
After an exceptionally hot summer, attention is already beginning to turn towards autumn across eastern Spain. For people living around Valencia, Gandia, La Safor, Cullera and the wider Mediterranean coast, that inevitably raises the question: could autumn 2026 bring another spell of torrential rain and DANA storms?
At the moment, nobody can say that a major DANA is definitely coming.
However, there are several reasons why meteorologists are watching the coming autumn closely.
Spain is heading towards the autumn season with an exceptionally warm Mediterranean, seasonal forecasts showing a wetter-than-average signal in parts of southern and western Europe, and a developing El Niño event in the Pacific.
Put those factors together and the prospect of a potentially warm, humid and occasionally very wet autumn becomes an interesting one.
But there is a big difference between saying the conditions could favour heavy rainfall and predicting another catastrophic DANA.
AEMET is already showing an interesting autumn signal
The latest seasonal prediction from AEMET covers August, September and October 2026 and currently gives a very high probability that temperatures will remain in the warmest tercile across Spain.
More interestingly for Valencia, AEMET is also showing a high probability of precipitation being in the wetter-than-average tercile across much of Spain, with the agency noting the importance of potentially intense convective episodes, particularly during August and September.
That doesn’t mean it is going to rain every day.
Seasonal forecasts cannot tell us whether Gandia will receive 100mm of rain on a particular Tuesday in October. They are probabilities over much larger areas and longer periods.
What they can do is tell us whether the overall atmospheric pattern is leaning towards warmer, drier, wetter or colder conditions.
And at the moment, the signal for Spain is certainly interesting.
The Mediterranean is exceptionally warm
Perhaps the most important factor for eastern Spain isn’t thousands of kilometres away in the Pacific.
It’s sitting just offshore.
The Mediterranean has been exceptionally warm this summer. Recent reporting has put sea temperatures around 29°C in parts of the western Mediterranean, several degrees above normal.
That’s important because warm seawater provides a huge source of heat and moisture to the atmosphere.
It doesn’t mean that warm Mediterranean water automatically creates a DANA.
It doesn’t.
But if an area of atmospheric instability arrives over Spain at the right time, a very warm sea can provide the moisture and energy needed to help storms become much more intense.
This is one of the reasons autumn weather around the Valencian coast can change so dramatically.
Why Valencia is so vulnerable to torrential rain
Anyone who has lived around Valencia for a while will know that autumn isn’t simply a continuation of summer.
The Mediterranean can remain extremely warm while the atmosphere above Spain begins to cool.
Eventually, the ingredients can come together.
Cooler air at altitude, warm and moisture-loaded air near the surface and the complex geography of eastern Spain can create an environment capable of producing extremely heavy rainfall.
That’s where DANA comes into the story.
The term gota fría is still widely used in Spain, but meteorologists generally refer to the phenomenon as a DANA — Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos, or isolated high-altitude depression.
And importantly, not every DANA produces flooding.
A DANA is a meteorological setup, not a synonym for disaster.
The really dangerous situations occur when the atmospheric conditions, moisture, instability, wind direction and local geography all line up.
El Niño is also getting attention
Then there’s El Niño.
A significant El Niño event is developing in the Pacific, and international forecasters are currently expecting it to strengthen considerably. Recent forecasts have even raised the possibility of an exceptionally strong event.
So is El Niño going to cause a DANA in Valencia?
Not directly.
That would be far too simplistic.
El Niño alters large-scale atmospheric circulation around the world. Its effects are much clearer in some parts of the globe than others, and predicting exactly what it will do to an individual region of Europe several months ahead is extremely difficult.
However, seasonal forecasting systems are already showing some interesting European signals.
The latest Copernicus seasonal forecast indicates a tendency towards wetter-than-average conditions during autumn in southern and western Europe, while also maintaining a strong signal for above-average temperatures across much of Europe. Copernicus is careful to point out that confidence and forecast skill are lower over Europe than in tropical regions.
That uncertainty is important.
It means we shouldn’t be writing the autumn off as a guaranteed washout.
So, are we heading for a bad “gota fría”?
Maybe — but nobody knows yet.
This is where some of the headlines and social-media posts about autumn 2026 need a little caution.
It would be completely reasonable to say:
There are currently several factors that could favour episodes of heavy autumn rainfall in eastern Spain.
It would not be reasonable to say:
A devastating DANA is definitely coming to Valencia.
The first is supported by the current seasonal outlooks.
The second simply cannot be known in August.
A specific DANA needs to be forecast much closer to the event. The exact position of the low-pressure system, its movement, wind direction and moisture supply can make an enormous difference to where the heaviest rain eventually falls.
What could make autumn 2026 interesting?
There are several pieces of the puzzle worth watching.
A very warm Mediterranean means there is plenty of available heat and moisture.
AEMET’s current seasonal outlook favours warmer-than-average conditions and also gives Spain a higher probability of wetter-than-average rainfall for August–October.
Copernicus is also seeing a wetter-than-average signal for southern and western Europe during autumn, although with considerable uncertainty.
And El Niño is developing strongly, potentially becoming an unusually powerful event.
None of those factors guarantees a major storm.
But together, they make the autumn weather something worth watching.
What about Gandia and La Safor?
For those of us around Gandia, Daimús, Miramar, Xeraco and the rest of La Safor, the autumn transition can be particularly interesting.
The area sits between the Mediterranean and the mountains, and local geography plays an important role in how rainfall develops.
A storm system that looks fairly ordinary on a national weather map can produce very different results once it reaches the Valencian coast.
One location might see heavy rain for an hour while another receives relatively little.
That’s why a national forecast saying “rain in Valencia” doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story.
When autumn arrives, local AEMET warnings and short-range forecasts become much more useful than a seasonal prediction made several months beforehand.
The Mediterranean could be the thing to watch
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the current situation isn’t actually El Niño.
It’s the combination of an exceptionally warm Mediterranean and an increasingly unstable autumn atmosphere.
Recent meteorological reporting has highlighted concerns about the unusually warm Mediterranean and its ability to provide additional moisture and energy when atmospheric instability arrives.
That doesn’t mean the sea itself creates torrential rain.
It means that when the right weather system arrives, the available moisture can become an important part of the equation.
And eastern Spain knows only too well what can happen when those ingredients come together.
After the summer we’ve had…
There’s also something rather strange about the potential autumn outlook.
We could go from 40°C summer temperatures to a situation where the Mediterranean is still exceptionally warm, temperatures remain above normal, but the atmosphere becomes increasingly capable of producing violent thunderstorms and torrential rain.
In other words, autumn doesn’t necessarily mean cool.
It could mean warm, humid and occasionally spectacularly wet.
There may still be plenty of beautiful sunny days around Gandia and the Valencian coast. But there could also be some days when the weather changes very quickly.
So should we be worried?
Not yet.
We should be watching.
That’s the sensible conclusion from the information available right now.
There is no reliable way in August to predict whether Valencia will suffer a major DANA in October or November.
But the current combination of very warm Mediterranean waters, AEMET’s wetter-than-average seasonal signal, Copernicus’ European autumn outlook and the developing El Niño makes this an autumn worth keeping an eye on.
And once autumn gets closer, the picture will become much clearer.
For anyone living around Gandia, La Safor, Cullera and the Valencian coast, the best advice is simple: don’t worry about a DANA that hasn’t been forecast yet — but when AEMET starts issuing warnings, take them seriously.
After all, a DANA isn’t dangerous simply because it exists.
It’s dangerous when the right ingredients come together in the wrong place.
And this autumn, there are certainly some interesting ingredients already on the table.
One final thought
After months of heat, swimming, beaches and brutally hot afternoons, there’s something quite appealing about the thought of a proper Valencian autumn storm.
Thunder, lightning, torrential rain and cooler air? Bring it on.
Just preferably without another 2024-style disaster.
